Women are the foundation of every society, yet for many women in the world's poorest regions, life is extraordinarily difficult. Moved with passion for the plight of the poor women, particularly the widows who were maltreated after the death of their husbands and left alone to cater for themselves and children with little or no means of livelihood, a group of five women came together in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria in January 2007 to form a support group with the aim of training the poor women in the rural communities on micro enterprise to establish means of livelihood for them; to improve the economic condition of their families and communities, build the courage and resourcefulness of women and to help women realize their potentials.
Having been able to establish some poor women in the rural communities with micro enterprises with support from caring individuals, churches, and the group's members; the organization gained encouragement and in 2008 was formally given a name - Women & Community Livelihood Foundation (WOCLIF). It became formally registered in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria with the Ministry Of Women Affairs and Social Welfare on May, 2009 as a Community Based Organization and also in Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria (CAC) on September, 2009 as a non-profit,
Non - Governmental Organization.
